Product info
Amorphophallus konjac is known as Penis Plant, Voodoo Lily and Devil’s Tongue. It flowers first before producing leaves. It has a decorative petiole (leaf stalk) which is a key feature of the plant’s appeal. The inflorescence can be 1.5 metres tall and the leaf 2 metres tall and 2 metres wide. The deep red inflorescence emits a foul, pungent smell for the first few days. Pollination takes place by flies and beetles that are attracted by stinking blooms as a source of food. They find nothing to their liking but crawl over the flowers, ensuring pollination.
Plant care
In spring, place the plant in nutritious and well-drained potting compost. Mix in 25% builder’s sand or seramis for good drainage. Use a large pot because it will develop into a large plant. Water sparingly to begin with, increasing the amount later when the growth shoots appear. Place the plant in a warm, well-lit location in a conservatory or greenhouse. It can be grown outside but there is a danger that it will rot or freeze in winter. In autumn, take the tuber out of the pot and overwinter in dry, dark and warm conditions. Repot in spring in fresh potting mix.
