Product info

Amorphophallus haematospadix is an infrequently available species belonging to this remarkable genus. It flowers before it produces foliage. The tall inflorescence comprises a light-coloured, almost white spathe and a dramatic, dark purple, upright spadix consisting of both male and female flowers. Pollination takes place by flies and beetles crawling over the flowers. They mistakenly assume that the foul-smelling flowers could be a source of food, only to be disappointed.

Plant care

The tuber of Amorphophallus haematospadix needs to be potted in spring in a large pot containing nutritious potting mix. Adding ¼ builder’s sand and seramis will ensure good drainage and water run-off. Place the pot in a warm and light position; give the plant plenty but not too much water and lots of fertiliser during the growing period. This plant likes a warm and bright location, but not fierce direct sunlight next to a window. A conservatory or greenhouse is ideal. Stop watering in autumn and store the tuber in a warm dark, dry place for the winter. Repot in spring in fresh soil.
