Product info
Amorphophallus gigas is massive, a giant of the genus. Its tubers can weigh as much as 70 kilos. Equally spectacular is the way it flowers. The dark elongated sheath bract or spathe contains a spadix or flower spike with both male and female flowers. This can be as tall as 2 metres in a cultivated plant and 3 metres in the wild. Once it has finished flowering, the plant produces an enormous, elephantine leaf.
Plant care
Amorphophallus gigas, the biggest plant in the genus, is a tropical plant that needs keeping in a tropical greenhouse or warm conservatory. Pot the tuber in a large pot containing nutritious soil mixed with sand and seramis for good drainage. Keep the potting mix moist but never wet. Place the pot in a warm spot in the conservatory or greenhouse. After a while, the impressive flower stem will appear, followed by the huge flower. In autumn, stop watering the plant in order to allow it to rest. Keep it in a warm and dark place for the winter and re-pot in spring.
