Stapelia divaricata

SuCa199
Specifications
Stapelia divaricata

The succulent Stapelia divaricate, indigenous to the Cape Province of South Africa, is a special sight. Stapelias are also called carrion flowers because of the rather distinctive scent of their flowers. They are pollinated by carrion flies and smell like a carcass to be as attractive as possible to these insects. On the other hand, this strain does not smell at all! The stems of Stapelia divaricate are thickened for water storage. The soft pink flowers grow at the base of these stems.

Plant care

Stapelia divaricata is easy to care for. It is an ideal plant for a cactus greenhouse or a warm sunny spot where few other plants would survive. On very sunny days it is good to give the plant some shade. An optimal temperature for this species is around 27°C. Plant the succulent in a clay pot, because these provide better drainage than plastic pots. Cactus soil is a very suitable substrate for the plant. You should keep it slightly moist during the growing period. Do not let the soil stay wet all the time. That will prove fatal to Stapelia divaricata. In winter, you can reduce watering to once a month. Fertilize with a low-nitrogen fertilizer when you want to accelerate growth.
