Product info

Begonia x erythrophylla is also referred to as the "beefsteak begonia". The plant owes this name to its very strong, thick leaves. These have a dark green shiny color at the top. At the bottom, this is a red beef-like color. Begonia x erythrophylla has, an other special feature, remarkably long hairs on all places except the top of the leaf. The begonia grows to about 30cm. White-pink flowers protrude above the foliage during flowering.

Plant care

Begonia x erythrophylla is an easy to care for variety. The plant can be kept in a terrarium as well as in the living room. However, this must be a place in the shade or partial shade. Too bright of light, such as direct sunlight, can cause the plant to lose its leaves. Begonia x erythrophylla is quite resistant to low temperatures down to 10⁰C, but is best kept at a temperature of 20-25⁰C. The soil should be allowed to dry slightly between watering to prevent root rot. High humidity is not essential for this species, 60% is enough. You can give a small amount of plant food once or twice a month to promote growth. A mix of peat with perlite is the best substrate for Begonia x erythrophylla. You can purchase these in our "plant supplies" section, along with many other useful growing supplies. It is possible to prune this begonia.
