Bladderwort 'Utricularia minor'

Carniutr72
Specifications
Utricularia minor

Many species of bladderwort are found in tropical regions, but this species is also found in the west of Europe. Utricularia minor, or 'little bladderwort' is endangered, so it has been put on the Red List. Utricularia minor likes to keep its feet wet, because it catches its prey underwater. It is possible to keep little bladderwort in an aquarium, but also outside in a pond. The yellow flowers will protrude from the surface like aerials.

Product info

Utricularia minor is widespread. This carnivore is found in North America, Asia, a small part of Africa and almost all of Europe. The leaves of the plant grow underwater and carry various bladders. This is where small insects get sucked in to be digested. From flower stems of around 10 centimetre yellow orchid-like flowers grow. These protrude from the water prominently and each carry one or two flowers.

Plant care

You don't need much to take care of Utricularia minor. This time the western European climate works to your advantage. If you want to keep little bladderwort inside, it is best to do this in a cold aquarium, a shallow vase or dish. Make sure the water flows now and then. Use soft water and refresh it regularly. This species is very easy to keep in a pond. Utricularia minor will rapidly spread if it is planted in the shallow part in peat or sand. Make sure your pond water is in motion and that algae don't get the upper hand. Kept inside, the plant needs more sunlight than outside.
