Begonia scutifolia

Begonia71
Specifications
Begonia scutifolia
This small begonia comes from the tropical regions of West Africa where it enjoys an extremely moist habitat such as near a lake or a waterfall. In the wild, the leaves are sometimes harvested and eaten as a vegetable. They are green and slightly hairy with a red border. Together with the red stems this makes for an interesting contrast. Begonia scutifolia has peach-coloured flowers, which is quite unusual for begonias.

Plant care

Begonia scutifolia is easy to cultivate and best grown in a terrarium. It needs plenty of light but must not be exposed to direct sunlight. A temperature of around 24⁰C is ideal but certainly no higher than 30⁰C or lower than 15⁰C. A high level of humidity is essential: 80% during the daytime and 95% at night. Sphagnum moss around the base of the plant will help to prevent the potting mix from drying out. Begonia scutifolia needs to be fertilised regularly, that is 2 or 3 times a month. A mixture of peat with another fibrous material or hard substrate such as perlite or coir (coconut fibre) works best. See “Plant accessories” for more information about these and other useful products. Begonia scutifolia can be pruned as required.
