Product info

Aerangis luteoalba var. rhodosticta is a small to medium sized species from the orchid family. This monopodial species forms fleshy, oval-shaped, dark green leaves, somewhat narrower than Phalaenopsis for example. It uses its thick, flattened roots to anchor itself to its substrate. In winter to spring, this species is able to flower. Mature plants could produce one or more pendant inflorescences that could reach 40 cm in length under ideal circumstances, carrying up to a dozen flowers. The strongly scented flowers are creme white as base color with a relatively long spur. All flowers show a notable bright orange centre, which contrasts strongly with the rest of the plant. This species could be propagated by separating younger individuals from the mature plant.

Plant care

Aerangis luteoalba var. rhodosticta grows naturally as an epiphyte on mossy branches of trees that stand near rivers. This species grows at altitudes of 1200 to 2200 meters. For good growth, provide a very moist environment with a minimum humidity of 75%. It grows best with temperatures between 16 and 25 degrees in daytime, with a 5 degrees drop at night. Allow for excellent ventilation at all times. Place this species in bright indirect light, direct sunlight is best to avoid. When humidity is high, it is best to grow this species mounted on a piece of cork or tree fern. A very airy substrate mixture for epiphytes could offer an alternative. Water very frequently in the growing season that lasts from the end of spring until the beginning of autumn. From then, reduce watering but prevent the plant from drying up completely. Fertilize this species frequently in the growing season with specialized orchid fertilizer.
