Orchid 'Encyclia polybulbon'

This orchid originating from Central America is found in the area in between South Mexico and Nicaragua. It can be found in the mountains, which characterizes the care it needs. This orchid can also be found on Cuba and Jamaica. As the name 'polybulbon' suggests, it has multiple bulbs from which leaves spring. Each can have 1 to 3 leaves. Encyclia polybulbon blossoms with one amber coloured flower, with a white lip. Due to its rambling growth it is preferably placed on slabs of wood or cork. It requires much light and can even take some sunlight as well. From the apex of the mature bulb a short inflorescence will grow and produce a lovely single, fragrant flower during wintertime.

Because Encyclia polybulbon originally grows on high altitudes the temperature should be around 25⁰C. At night it should be around 8⁰C colder than during the day. Don't let the temperature drop below 15⁰C or rise above 30⁰C. For the best results, water the plant using rainwater or distilled water whenever the roots dry slightly. With a higher humidity, this should be less frequent. Encyclia polybulbon needs a light spot, out of direct sunlight. A proper humidity and plenty of airflow will help prevent infections and disease.
