This species, related to the arum, comes from tropical Africa. Amorphophallus mossambicensis is particularly striking because of its burgundy color. Product info

Amorphophallus mossambicensis is found in southern tropical Africa, northern Tanzania and Mozambique, to which the plant owes its Latin name. You will receive seeds that you can plant in normal soil yourself. These will then grow into a plant with one large leaf, which, however, looks like a collection of several separate leaves. When the plant is ready to bloom you will first see the flower appear. The leaves of Amorphophallus mossambicensis only develop when the flower has wilted. The fruits are small red berries that sit in a bundle on a long stem. This species is around 60 cm tall.

Plant care

Amorphophallus mossambicensis needs a fairly high temperature of around 25°C. However, the humidity can be slightly lower than with many other voodoo lily varieties from Asia, around 60%. It is very important to ensure that water cannot remain in the pot. You can prevent this by putting a layer of bark at the bottom of the pot and then using normal soil to cover it. Stone is also suitable, but does not allow the plant to extract nutrients from it. The surface must always be allowed to dry up during flowering. When the plant comes into its resting period you must reduce the amount of water. However, the tuber must not dry out, as this can be fatal to the plant. Amorphophallus mossambicensis needs a fairly light location. Be careful that the leaves do not dry out in the summer. You can fertilize the voodoo lily with normal plant food during the flowering period to help it out.
