Roridula (flycatcher bush)

Roridula (flycatcher bush)

Roridula (flycatcher bush)

This carnivorous plant genus is found in South Africa, but is officially not considered a carnivorous plant. This exotic plant lures and catches insects using the same method as other carnviorous plant genus like Sundew (Drosera) although Roridula does not itself digest insects. This is because it lacks the glands and enzymes to extract nutrients from its prey. However, Roridula as a cunning semi carnivorous plant, has found a way to resolve this. The plant has become a host for a type of insect (capsid or symbiotic bugs) that has the ability to walk on the sticky leaves without hindrance. Insects caught by Roridula’s are eaten by the capsid bugs. The liquid excrement from the insects are digested by Roridula and directly used as a fertilizer.
