Begonia polilloensis starter

Begonia70
Specifications
Begonia polilloensis
Begonia polilloensis is a unique and hard to find tropical begonia native to the Philippines. It has unusual leaves for a begonia: thin, narrow and palmate, having a shape similar to that of a hand with extended fingers. This makes it look like a fern. The leaves are bright green which contrasts beautifully with their red stems. Begonia polilloensis, produces pale pink flowers and is easy to cultivate in a terrarium

Product info

Begonia polilloensis is one of the strangest types of begonia but highly attractive nevertheless. Fern-like green leaves, red stems and pale pink flowers add up to a dramatic combination. The flowers have a cluster of yellow stamens or pistils at the centre, which are large like those of other begonia species. Begonia polilloensis is a dwarf variety and therefore ideal for a smaller terrarium.

Plant care

Begonia polilloensis is best grown in a terrarium with artificial light at around 24⁰C. The temperature must never be lower than 12⁰C or higher than 30⁰C. Humidity of 70% is sufficient during the daytime but it needs to be 20% higher at night. Water often enough to make sure the potting mix does not dry out, using tepid (lukewarm) water. Make sure there is good air circulation in the terrarium to help prevent infection and disease Begonia polilloensis needs a growing medium that will retain moisture but still have good drainage such as a mixture of peat and perlite. Sphagnum moss will also help retain moisture. Go to “Plant accessories” for more details of these and other useful products..
