The distribution of the genus Pinguicula is mainly limited to the Northern Hemisphere with a very limited number of species found in South America. These carnivorpus plants occur in carious climates throughout nature from arctic to moderate and tropical areas. There are currently 80 known species of Pinguicula with new discoveries now and then.
The plants grow on moist to wet soils from sea level to mossy and stony areas reaching 3800 metres high in the Andean mountains. The Butterwort has nicely coloured flowers attached to long, thick and meaty stems. The hardy species such as Pinguicula vulgaris, Pinguicula alpina and Pinguicula grandiflora can be grown outside in Europe. The Mexican species of this exotic carnivorous plant such as Pinguicula moranensis, Pinguicula agnate and Pinguicula gypsicola can be easily grown in your living room as long as they are constantly placed in standing water.
