Product info

The Sarracencia purpurea belongs to the family of American pitcher-plants, a special species of carnivorous plants native to the eastern part of the US and to Canada. The cup-shaped snares of the Sarracencia purpurea are located close to the soil and are somewhat squat. Under high light intensity the snares turn a deep-red colour. On the bottom of the snare is always some rain water with digestive enzymes, in which the insects drown and are digested. This plant has no lid on top of the snare like many other Sarracencia, because this particular type needs rain water in its cups. The flowers of this type of Sarracencia are purple and grow on tall stalks. The Sarracencia purpurea is a hardy species that can be cultivated indoors as well as outdoors. Araflora has many different species of Sarracencia in its assortment. Do have a look at the other cultivated varieties as well.

Plant care

The Sarracencia purpurea can be cultivated indoors but also in the garden winter and summer. Native to Canada this species can easily withstand hard frost. This carnivorous plant prefers a sunny or light spot and plenty of moisture. Indoors the container of the Sarracencia purpurea should always be placed in a bed of [rain] water. A spot near a pond is also ideal. In winter when there is less growth, the plant must be kept moist and preferably at a low temperature. The soil for the Sarracencia should be poor in nutrients. Araflora uses a mix of peat, sand and perlite. Feeding the plant insects is not necessary.
