Product infoDiastema is a genus of flowering plant in the family Gesneriaceae containing approximately 20 species ranging from Mexico in the north to Bolivia and Venezuela in the south. Like other member of the large Gesneriaceae family, Diastema has tubular flowers that are often extremely beautiful. Diastema vexans has white flowers at the end of coloured tubes with white in the throat and violet stripes extending on to the lip. The insides of the petals are white with a lavender coloured pattern. It has a rhizome or creeping rootstalk, meaning a subterranean stem that sends out roots and shoots from its nodes.
Plant careDiastema vexans is easy to grow and will cover a large area in a short space of time. It needs well-drained soil, regular watering and regular feeding with plant food. It blooms in December. Diastema vexans may have a dormant phase when the leaves die down and the plant retreats into its rhizome. New shoots will appear after several weeks.
