Product info
The leaves of Begonia dregei are lightly serated and green on top and red underneath. They have two large and two small tepals together with a cluster of stamens or a curled pistil at the centre, both of which are bright yellow. Begonia dregei is found exclusively in South Africa. It reaches a height of roughly 30 centimetres.
Plant care
Coming from a relatively temperate climate, Begonia dregei requires a cool to warm terrarium and a reasonably humid atmosphere. The temperature should be around 22⁰C but never less than 10⁰C or more than 30⁰C. Humidity needs to be 60% during the daytime and 80% at night. The potting mixture must not be allowed to dry out. A dish placed under the pot containing a modicum of water will help. Sphagnum moss round the base of the plant will also keep the growing medium moist. The best potting compound consists of a mixture of peat and perlite. See the section entitled ‘Plant accessories’ for more information. Begonia dregei can be fertilised twice a month with plant food and can be pruned if it becomes bigger than originally intended.
