Begonia polygonoides

Begonia54
Specifications
Begonia polygonoides
Unlike many begonias, this species does not have heart-shaped leaves. They are in fact elongated, tapering to a point. It produces flowers from where the leaf joins the plant’s main stem. They are white with a cluster of yellow stamens or a yellow pistil at the centre. Begonia polygonoides is easy to cultivate and ideal for a terrarium because of its size and requirements.

Product info

Begonia polygonoides is originally an African epiphyte which means it grows on other plants and trees. It has long stems with a profusion of white flowers trailing like a head of hair. Unlike other begonias, its leaves are both pointed and small. Their green colour forms a marked contrast with their red stems. At the centre of its white flowers, Begonia polygonoides has a cluster of yellow stamens or a yellow pistil.

Plant care

Begonia polygonoides needs good light in order to grow successfully and is well-suited to a terrarium. It must not be exposed to strong sunlight or it will dry out. It requires a temperature above 10⁰C and less than 30⁰C, ideally between 20 and 25⁰C. Humidity needs to be around 70% during the daytime and roughly 90% at night. Always allow the soil to dry out before watering again. If the level of humidity in the room is on the low side, place the pot in a dish containing water. Begonia polygonoides will benefit from a small amount of fertiliser once or twice a month. Good ventilation will help protect it against infection and disease. The best growing medium is a mixture of peat and perlite, several kinds of which are available in “Plant accessories”. The stems are fairly fragile so it is best to train them or allow them to hang down from a hanging pot or basket. If stems become too long, they can be pruned.
