Product info
Begonia itatiaiensis grows to a height of 25centimetres. It comes originally from the coast of Brazil where the climate is temperate. It has fairly large leaves - remarkably similar to the leaves of a water lily - with a marked contrast between the colour of the upper surface and that of the underside. The white flowers are each 2 centimetres wide and grow in clusters above the leaves.
Plant care
Begonia itatiaiensis is easy to care for in a terrarium. It needs plenty of light but should not be exposed to direct sunlight. The temperature should be no lower than 10⁰C or higher than 30⁰C. In order to imitate natural conditions, humidity should be around 70% during the day and slightly higher at night. The growing medium must be kept moist at all times. Placing moss around the base of the plant will help. Fertilising once or twice a month with plant food will promote growth. Good air circulation around the plant will prevent infection and disease. A mixture of bark, sand and sliced leaves makes a good growing medium. Go to “Plant accessories” for more information about these and other relevant products. The plant can be pruned whenever growth looks excessive.
