Specifications
Begonia x Tamaya big white flowers
Begonia maculata ‘Tamaya’ makes an ideal ornamental houseplant. Unlike some begonia species, it is extremely easy to care for. This Brazilian native produces clusters of showy, white flowers that hang down under large, dark-green leaves. Speckled with silvery white spots, they grow on bamboo-like canes up to 1 metre long, giving the plant the look of a Japanese bonsai tree.

Product info

Begonia maculata comes originally from South America. Begonia maculata ‘Tamaya’ is a cultivar that has been bred selectively for its distinctive appearance. It produces bat-wing shaped leaves at the end of bald, cane-like stems. The leaves can be up to 25 centimetres long, taper to a point and are covered in white spots. At the end of each leaf stem, Begonia maculata ‘Tamaya’ produces bunches of ten or so large white flowers with a pinkish tinge. Yellow stamens at the heart of the male flowers stand out against the rest of the bloom.

Plant care

Begonia maculata ‘Tamaya’ is easy to care for and an ideal houseplant. Like other begonias, it needs plenty of light but must not be exposed to strong, direct sunlight in summer. It requires a daytime temperature of 20⁰C and no lower than 15⁰C at night. Begonia maculata ‘Tamaya’ can be grown outdoors, provided the temperature does not fall below 15⁰C and it is protected against rain. A tray/dish under the pot containing lukewarm water - in order to minimise differences in temperature - will help keep the potting mixture moist. Humidity should be 70% during the daytime and 90% at night. Begonia maculata ‘Tamaya’ benefits from regular fertilising 2 to 3 times a month. A peat-based mixture makes the best kind of potting compound. For more information about this and other useful products, go to “Plant accessories”.
