Product info

Leptotes bicolor (literaly meaning 'two colored') is found in Brazil and Paraguay, at an altitude ranging from 700 - 1100 m. In this area moderate temperatures prevail (16-20 degrees at night). The fragrant, white-pink flowers of Leptotes bicolor grow to a diameter of 4 - 5 cm, which is relatively big for a miniature orchid. The flowers open subsequently and yield seeds with a vanilla like taste. In South-America these seeds are used for flavoring milk and ice cream.

Plant care

Leptotes bicolor grows on tree trunks in the wild so it prefers to grow in half shadow. The dark place should not be to moist, that can cause the delicate roots of the orchid to rot. If the soil tends to be to moist it is wise to tie the plant up to cork or fern root. A high humidity is recommended, this can be achieved by growing Leptotes bicolor in close proximity to sphagnum ( a kind of moss). Provide a moderately cool temperature (16-20 degrees Celsius at night). At the end of winter and the beginning of spring the mildly fragrant flowers appear. After blossoming of the flowers make sure to water the plant less frequently.
