Product info

The frond is pinnate and lanceolate. The leaf strongly resembles the more well-known Dicksonia antartica, but is somewhat lighter of color and finer in structure. The Dicksonia fibrosa is a slow gorwer, but in nature some specimens reach heights of up to six meters, though it takes them decades to a century. Once placed in culture in Northern Europe they continue to be a lot smaller, and after many years may reach about three meters. The trunk, or actually 'false stem', is covered with a thick layer of fine roots. The Dicksonia fibrosa originates in New Zealand, where this treelike fern is found in both lower coast areas as well as in mountainous areas up to 2700 meters above sea level.

Plant care

Always water the tree fern in the crown. During warm weather, moisturize the trunk to prevent dehydration. During winter frost, bind the frond and cover the trunk with fleece. Make sure to also cover the soil around the trunk. One can put thatch in the crown. The placement of Dicksonia fibrosa is in (partial) shade, especially the trunk is best put in shade, while the leaves can endure a little more sun. Properly permeable, nutritious soil is most suitable. A (small) Dicksonia fibrosa can be placed inside, with the possibility of moving it outside during summer. The Dicksonia fibrosa is the most hardy kind of Dicksonia. The order of hardiness per species of tree fern (the first being the most hardy) is as follows: Dicksonia fibrosa, Dicksonia antarctica, Blechnum nudum, Cyathea australis, Dicksonia squarrosa, Brainea insignis. This list is not comprehensive.
