Product info

The Dioscorea, commonly called Elephant’s Foot or Hottentot Bread, was originally found in Mexico and South-Africa. Above the ground the tubers of this plant have a very special shape, somewhat cork-like and divided in irregular pieces resembling a tortoiseshell. From this tuber the stalks with their heart-shaped leaves emerge. In their natural surroundings the stalks can grow up to 10 metres high. The tubers of the Dioscorea elephantipes are edible and can also be used as a medicine.

Plant care

The Dioscorea plants are best placed in a spot with direct sunlight. In Holland these plants can be kept outdoors from mid-May to the end of September. They can tolerate low temperatures but cannot survive frost or a too watery soil. Every year the leaves and stalks of the plant die off but the tuber stays alive and will sprout again the next spring.
