Large bladderwort is an easy-care, carnivorous plant with beautiful green, thread-like leaves. Unrestrained the plant floats on the water without growing any roots. The cup-shaped snares – about 5mm in size – are on the outer leaves. Every snare has a small lid and on the inside of the snare are sensitive ‘hairs’ which respond to touch. When an insect touches the hairs, the cup swells thereby creating a water current in the direction of the snare. In this current the insect is sucked into the snare. Whereupon the lid of the snare snaps shut and the animal is trapped and digested. In Holland Large bladderwort is an indigenous plant as in all the temperate zones of Europe. Araflora has many different types of bladderwort for sale. The Large bladderwort does well in either pond or aquarium. The Utricularia vulgaris thrives in a lot of light and makes few demands on the temperature of the water. The natural outer temperature in Holland as well as the temperature indoors is imminently suited to the cultivation of this small plant. The Utricularia vulgaris also makes no high demands on the quality of the water it lives in; that may be neutral to slightly alkaline and should not be rich in nutrients. This Araflora plant is for decoration only and not for consumption.
